Medical Oncology

Medical Oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer. The scope of Medical Oncology in SKMTH encompasses various aspects related to cancer care, amongst others:

  1. Diagnosis: interpretation of diagnostic tests such as biopsies, imaging scans (CT scan, MRI and PET scan) and blood tests to determine the presence, stage and grade of cancer.
  2. Treatment planning: develop a personalized treatment plans based on the specific type and stage of cancer and patient’s overall health. Treatment options including targeted chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal and palliative care.
  3. Chemotherapy infusion: our well trained Oncology Nurses and Medical Oncologist administer chemotherapy in the appropriate dosage, schedule and duration. They monitor the patient’s response to the therapy. 

4. Target therapy and immunotherapy:  our doctors are knowledgeable on target therapy and immunotherapy which are newer treatment approaches that specifically target cancer cells or enhance the body’s immune response against cancer. In-patient services: well established isolation and neutropenic rooms for myelosuppressive patients.

FUTURE PLANS FOR MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

  1. Expansion of services:     Medical oncology plan to expand services to meet the evolving healthcare needs of this country by adding new specialties or subspecialties such as Hematology, Head & neck Oncologist etc.
  2. Research and clinical trials: participating in clinical trials to advance medical knowledge and provide access to innovative treatments through collaborations and recruitment of experienced researchers.
  3.  Collaboration and Partnerships: with other healthcare organization, research institutions, community organization and pharmaceutical companies is our priority to enhance the effectiveness and credibility of an oncology center.
  4. Immunotherapy advancements:  use more immunotherapy which harness the body ‘s immune system to fight cancer cells.
