Our History

1980s, Conceptualization and consideration to address shortage of healthcare professionals 

1988, Presidential Task Force Established to evaluate the need for a Teaching Hospital. 

1989, Recommendation to establish a Teaching Hospital. 

2005, Remedial measures to establish a medical school with a suitable infrastructure to support learning activities.  

2010, Construction of the Facility starts. 

2014, State -of -the art Medical School Infrastructure is completed. 

2015, Teaching Hospital positioned as a quaternary facility at the apex of health care hierarchical system. 

2016, SKMTH (then BUH) established as a public company to give autonomy. Constitution established

2017, Appointed Board of Directors. 

2018, The then University of Botswana Teaching Hospital was renamed Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital in honour of Botswana’s second President, in recognition of his immense and immeasurable contribution to ’s development country from 1980 to 1998. He also served as the University of Botswana Chancellor from 1980 to 1998. He was reappointed Chancellor from 2008 until his passing on in June 2017.

SKMTH Appointed Commissioning Manager 

2019, SKMTH sets up a commissioning team tasked with delivering the opening of the facility. 

2020, Designated as the isolation and treatment centre for Covid-19.

2022, Commissioning of services started with Radiology on the 1st of September.
